Forum should support file attachments as PHPBB does

Post by uwekel »

Hi,

very often you can see in the forum that users post sample code. For small sources it might be ok, but for larger listings it is very confusing. I think it could be a good improvement for this forum, to support file attachments as PHPBB3 does, as you can see in this blog:

Thanks for reading :-)

+1 Allowing uploads of screenshots etc. and downloads only for members - if bandwidth is a concern - would be a great idea!
If any of you native English speakers have any suggestions for the above text, please let me know (via PM). Thanks!

+1 Would make life much easier as a lot of existing links to other sites for downloads are null and void. Some other sites for downloads are really treacherous too.

If it sounds simple, you have not grasped the complexity.

... that's one of the dislikes on PB forums here. Never understood why no support for uploading image files. Images and archives, text files that people links to goes down and then those who comes to these posts later on are unfortunate.

While code files may be fine, the prospect of uploading media files can cost mucho deniro, storage-wise. It all depends on the hosting options that Fantaisie Software is using.

I cannot imagine that traffic is an issue. We are just a very small community with a couple of dowbloads per day.

Idle said he deleted 450 spam posts today.
Imagine if each uploaded a 1 MB virus, too.
That's a lot of wasted bandwidth and also
malware problem to go with it. No, thanks.

It's probable, but I've never observed in the past that SPAMbots trying to use the boards Attachment support to upload files.

Regarding Malware, it’ll only be of an issue if you have a tendency to download everything you see posted and from God only knows who from. When you surfing the web, or checking e-mails, you use common sense.

At minimum PB board should support simple images, or you even against that?

PureBasic files should also be permitted.

People on the board already linking to offsite archive files. Thus far I don't remember anyone complaining about getting infected or there was attempt to infect. I like to think its because we are family. Also we don't bite the hand that feeds us.

@PB

If attachments were limited to certain filetypes such as text - which, in fact, what .pb files are - there should not be a spam problem?

According to the current stats, the PureBasic forum has a little over five thousand registered users, with nearly half a million posts. Even with all the account information and avatars, the storage footprint should not be more than just a few gigabytes; and that's spanning a period of over ten years.

With uploads, especially of media files, both storage and bandwidth would grow exponentially.

Any disadvantages from malicious entities can quite easily be overcome.
In my opinion the expense of hosting member's data should be outweighed by the help it would provide to the development community,
and by extension the company behind the compiler.
If I were in charge I would limit the total amount of server file space available to a member to what I consider a reasonable amount.
Today people would be happy with about 500MB, but I could live with 25MB.
Make the individual member responsible for the contents in the terms of use.

Since there has been no positive feedback by TPTB on this,
I will assume that I need to hassle with registering with a free file hosting company.
Does anyone know of a good solution? I don't need gigabytes.
Just a place to allow users to download zip files.
Keep it BASIC.

It would be nice. But.

Anyone can have a home page nowadays and cat put links to the files there, as I do.

If you don't want/need an homepage just create a free account on dropbox or similar services.

The load is distributed, you keep a better control of your stuff, no cost in bandwidth or storage for PB.

I concede it need a little more effort than pushing a button here, but a similar arrangement can be useful elsewhere too.

I should have asked for a specific site recommendation as to what is considered the best and easiest to use free file server.
No captchas, just ftp style U/L & D/L menus if possible.
A free service not intrusive into my privacy, i.e. I'd only need an email address to use the services.
And of course no three letter big brother front org.
I'm thinking that the lack of the free and private seems to be a sensitive subject.
But with UBUNTU1 shutting down, I see no obvious place to use.

When trying to enlist help in debugging, sometimes supplying a fully working code is impractical.
Making the appropriate media or a small executable available could increase the chances for help.
Keep it BASIC.
