FLIF Image Format

Post by nco2k »

has anyone tried out the flif image format yet? it looks very promising: http://flif.info/software.html

unfortunately its still in heavy development. but once its finished, this could be made into a pb image plugin. the tiny image size comes with a cost though. the en-/decoding is pretty slow in its current state. but im positive it will be improved in the future.

the really cool part is the progressive decoding. you dont need to create a seperate, smaller, low quality version of your image for a thumbnail. you can simply load the first half of the image and use it as the thumbnail. that is, if browsers ever support this format natively.

another surprise was how well the lossless version of the webp format can keep up. we have been using jpg and png for more than 20 years now. its great to finally see some improvements in the image format world. :)
