I know good stories about beggars, some who were rich and became poor, some who were poor and became rich (good traders somehow), some who were rich to be poor, some who were poor to be rich, some who gets rich to be poor, some who gets poor to be rich. Surely, you could be happier to be rich, especially in good health, that money can't guarantee.
I've known people like that too, but to have persistent status means on average you were adept enough to make good decisions and approximate outcomes in negotiations.
djes wrote:Maybe you aren't conscious about what is free. Let's start with something common : firefighters are working for free. Enlarge : police is free. In fact, all whole countries (not especially services) are free. At this point, you say : false, it costs money, we pay taxes ! It's not exactly true. It costs energy, in form of work and goods. Before money was invented, you get social help from the others to fight disease, to help construct your house, to eat. This is work. And you get goods from ... Nature. Everything that you get from nature is free. Now, add hundred of years of "progress", and it's right that a lot of theses things are not "free" anymore. Especially things that are really complicated, like computers, vaccines, exotic foods... Are they really important ? Sure, some of them. Maybe less than a mother's love, but they could be useful anyway.
Not really.. It wasn't until minted currency and capitalism that things became organized enough for civilization to produce vaccines and life expectancy rose up.. Same with refrigeration.

Also,, none of that energy is given for free.. The person in the US who needs at least $1,500.00 a month to pay for living expenses isn't going out in the cold for anything else.. I'd imagine it's the same even in France where a lot of people think along your lines.

At least most of the reason I'm even in the US is capitalism.. Definitely not the scenery or nice people..
djes wrote:Well... I only know one or two, and they're not really friends. They certainly have a lot to learn from the people "making" less.
In most countries I've lived the average person making 500 USD or euro more than another person will noticeably differentiate themselves from that person.

I'm not saying this is intelligent, and I even find it petty and stupid, but it's real..
djes wrote:There's a lot of terms handled like toys that aren't. Capitalism. Evil. Socialism. Communism. Republic. Thousand years of human thinking, debates, fights, progress, wars, achievements and climb-down. One side of the balance. In the other side, what ? A computer. That's what is wrong with capitalism. It overestimates some not really useful things, underestimate some others. To achieve this, it handles common vices, like envy. What is really important ?
A computer is automation. That one can be used as a processing server to generate revenue. You are right though I should of asked for a CNC machine which is slightly more profitable.

I'll play *society* whenever even one out of a thousand of the billions does..

Those wise quotes are always very Confucius-like and never have any real advice or wisdom just single-state advice which has all the likelihood to be irrelevant.
I'd like to hear one from Gates, Buffet, or Helu based on economics and sociology, or Jello Biafra on philosophy.. People with proven experience and not perspective from failure that might be able to save you from their mistakes..
Careful how you quantify success. Tesla also died penniless and depressed. Would you not want an hour with Nikola Tesla or a few minutes with Jesus Christ!?

I get nothing from Buffet or Gates. Only to chastise Bill G for choosing CR+LF for line termination and flipping the path designator to '\'.

Tesla, given how if you look at source material for modern christianity it looks like Jesus Christ existed but 98% of what you hear and read is wrong, and christianity is the first or second most violent religion in documented human history..

Tesla is a bad example. All the people around him basically screwed him over in the name of capitalism while he was focused on defending against Edison's accusations..

I'm aware of all the dynamics. I usually just go on the belief that the average person is just greedy and deceptive, but that brings more arguments because it's even further from political correctness..

Who knows maybe one day PureBASIC will cost four-goats or a mule and people will only pass personal judgment based on behavior.. Then most of what is current political correctness won't be just strategic deception..
The truth hurts.

I can't disagree with you, but then I do choose optimism for my internal guidance.

You make me realize something. I have not enjoyed my life, even if I tried to be a good fellow. I must confess that the most pleasure I had, was I judged "stupid" things, straining my body, hurting, pushing the limits. But, even if I have the luck that nothing is really forbidden (at least if you're running fast!), I have most of the time followed rules, real or imaginary.

Now, I have a global consciousness, and it's a pain. I know when something goes wrong. I feel when people are suffering, when they're mad. I see stupid behavior all the time. It's killing me. The latest thing I have to accept to not kill myself, and to understand why we are on Earth, is beauty. But, often, I have to work on myself to see beauty, not only the ugliness around. More, to create it. I almost trying to be kind all the time, linking people together, caring, helping. I'm not alone, I see this all around me. In fact, I'm surrounded by people like that. Even the most egotist people shows sometimes some social emotion. Anywhere I go. It's why I can rely on Couchsurfing for example, all around the globe.

At this point, even if I could appreciate society and its pleasure, I could live alone, like a monk, and surely enjoy it. I don't really need anybody, just a good and healthy environment. And I don't care to die, it's part of the process. My body will be recycled and the atoms making me will have a long destiny, like being part of a star, a computer, or a $50 bill, who knows ? Anyway, we'll all finish like that, so what, we should enjoy this stupid life, as much as we can when the body permits it, after that let's die.

So, you're so right to try to accomplish your dreams. Going to the US, being greater. Don't do like me : don't enjoy sadness. And ... beware of the beauty.
