my fathers fight with cancer ...

Since September last year, the doctors found cancer in my fathers body.
The cancer was to big and to spread out to save my loved father.

He past away in january (and I mis him every day more and more).

Now my mother is in treatment for intestine cancer.
The doctors detected the cancer in early stage, so my mother can be saved for a while.

I decided to stop my CAD/CAM software for now,
and like I promised, I go write some software to detect cancers in an early stage.
This with converting 2D CT/MR scan images to 3D models (meshes).

But I'm stuck and have some 3D mesh problems,
and I need some 3D guru to help me, and I can PM for some ideas ...

The goal is to distribute the software for free in the future,
to help detecting cancer in an early stage.

Hi Marc. Sorry to hear that your mother also has cancer. Hopefully the early detection will mean she can beat it. I know many people who have beaten cancer, there is always hope.

With regards to making models from 2D CT/MR scan images, do you have samples of those files that we can see?

I will pray for your mother. It is not easy...all three of my immediate family (father, mother, brother) battled cancer in 2012. The others pulled through, but my father seems to be losing the battle.

I actually got some MR images of me in 2D on a CD, they should be enough to generate a 3D image. Do you think it will work with my images, can I try it out?

I'm talking with more and more people,
and all of them are having someone who have some cancer in the family or friends.
I did not realize that cancer is giving so big impact on peoples lives.

This gives me a big push to continue with my project.
To detect this in an earlier stage, this give a bigger chance to survive this disease.

What I did with my fathers and mothers CT/MR images,
I open the software (light) on the scanner CD.
Then I export all the images in .bmp format (24 bits gray-scale).
And then I read them in my program and build a 3D pointed mesh.
If you can do that, you can use my software (for now I use only .bmp format images).
This uses very much CPU power to calculate/convert this images to 3D mesh.

150 gray-scale images of (518x518) pixels => 40248600 32bit data > mesh
I takes now 10...60 sec to build the 3D mesh.

After that is takes a lot of GPU power to rotate/zoom the 3D image,
so I build in a volume selection limits (left/right - back/front - top/bottom)

Yes, if you can export your scans, you can build your 3D meshes.

I'm working on a software to convert the 2D CT/MR scans with a larger gray-scale values.
How more gray colors, the better the 3D visual results.

Wouldnt it be better to use a voxel engine for that?
It should be way easier to build and handle a voxel model of the scans.

Volumetric transparency is absolutly no problem with voxels.

I have to say this: be careful you don't get sued. Seriously.
Medical diagnosis software is tightly regulated and if anyone,
even accidentally, thinks they have cancer because of your
app, then you're in for a world of financial hurt (possibly even
bankruptcy) if they act or rely on it. So I hope you've really
considered and made plans for that side of things.

You're right about that, but a properly worded disclaimer should cover that. Just as any standard EULA indemnifies the developer from any liability arising from the use of their software, a disclaimer does the same thing, expressly stating that the app should be used only as a guide, and is not meant as a substitute for professional medical advice.
