It is just a new design, not the return to a classical non-accelerated desktop. Every Windows version
over the last 25 years had design changes.
It is hardware accelerated as well and without transparency it should be even faster than Aero.
The whole Metro thing with live tiles is hardware accelerated and smoothly animated. Of course
you can't see that in static screen shots. Windows Phone users already know what I mean.

Windows 8 as with ubuntu unity is awful!!! looks terrible works terrible Yuk!!! Have run w8 in a vm and deleted within a day. The minute support for w7 (unless a vista maneuver happens to w8 and w9 has aero type interface) its a full switch to Linux. (debian or mint) ubuntu

Aero, we have amazing grunt in gfx cards today whats wrong with aero even better wobbly windows etc else we might have stayed with an matrox 8mb card lol

That's exactly my experience and on a growing number of forums you can read this as well.
Ubunty went both irritating and less productive with the unity desktop, same thing
with the Windows 8 Metro desktop. A smartphone/tablet UI on a laptop or desktop ?
It's simply less productive and irritating. But hey, since we are in the middle of a
smartphone/tablet hype even Microsoft thinks that this is also the new user experience
on laptops and desktops. I don't know what it is but history seems to repeat it selves
and after every x os versions they lose contact with the user and how they really want
their user experience. Who really cares for fancy stuff, shiny windows, glossy buttons,
or a smartphone/table UI on the desktop ? It's only a cosmetic thing but doesn't add anything
to your work. In the end we want things to be done fast and easy with a desktop that explains
it's self with a few mouse clicks. Windows 7 should have combined the desktop of Windows XP
with Windows 7 with the new stuff of Windows 7 under the hood, so Windows 8
wouldn't be necessary for at least a couple of years. Oh we'll at least Linux Mint 12
delivers a succesful user experience with both Gnome 3 and MGSE on the desktop.
Let's see how Win 8 Metro is going to end.

Windows 8 does have Aero (so far). Here is a look at the Release Preview due to release June 1st.

Suits me just fine, one of the first things I do after installing Windows 7 is turn off Aero. IMHO Aero is just a waste of system resources that I'd rather be available for things I want to do rather than just making Windows look "pretty".

To me the loss of the Start button and the desktop that has been there since Windows 95 is a far bigger "issue" than the loss of Aero which I never wanted anyway.

It's funny how zdnet and all those other computer magazines mostly only have to say negative things about Windows and Microsoft in general - It really feels like their only reason for these controversial / enraging posts is to get some more readers...

I for example are very excited to finally try out Windows 8!
The new start screen looks like a great improvement - How I hate to browse through thousands of menus just to accidentally click on the desktop.
Same goes for the file explorer - It's much easier now to get to the options I want to and that ribbon can even be minimized.
Well, personally I think that Aero still looks nice but maybe they're right about it not being "useful" and up-to-date anymore. On the other hand Metro seems to be pretty well thought out and tidy.
What else do we have? Lightning fast boot up, new login screen, restoring functionality, new taskmanager, "storage spaces" etc. - All seems to be a great addition to Windows and pretty useful.

Using XP 'All Programs'? You can change it to a single scrolling list ala Windows 7.

As long as Windows 8 has downgrade rights to Windows 7, Windows 8 will be a success.
