Apart from the fact that this one is a joke...yeah I heard about it. ;)
If you want a good flight simulator, check this one out: http://riseofflight.com/en/

Just saying...

Nice hijacking of the thread. :P

Back to the topic itself: is Microsoft Flight just the latest incarnation of its Flight Simulator franchise? If so, I wonder why it's now suddenly free, when it was so expensive in the past? Still, I'm going to check it out, so thanks GWarner! :)

It looks like a Free 2 Play gimmick.

Many online games (especially MMOs) are converting to this system of "free" games with premium content you pay for. Like most Asian games, basically, you get some "core" game for free, but you can buy items from the game "store" with in-game currency (points) that you purchase from the company. Some games offer the old subscription model, which unlocks access to all areas of the game and a few other perks, but anything else is bought in the in-game store with "points" you can win for completing tasks, or purchase with money.

Turbine / Warner Bros did this a while ago. First with Dungeons & Dragons online, and saw the profits from the game skyrocket. They converted Lord of The Rings Online after that. Pretty much making money hand-over-fist now.

Wiki pretty much confirms my hunch..

Shield, you sound like you're just trolling so I ignore your posts.

Zach, you make free-to-play sound like something horrid, whiich it isn't. You still get a playable game for free, nobody is holding a gun to you head saying you have to buy those in-game items, that is entirely your choice.

It's still true what I said. Try it out for yourself and you'll notice that there are much better flight sims out there.

Thank you, GWarner!

Tried MS Flight first time today and I really like it. Just purchased the Hawaii Pack. :)

Have you seen DLC Sneak Peek: Journey to Alaska? Looks very nice!

Fly around, do some missions and special Aerocache hunting... and everything without war and without killing people. Just peace and flying... very nice.

Sorry if my Q is <offtopic>. I thought maybe some more guys may be interested in this.

What's the best flight simulator?

I do NOT mean computer war games like Rise of Flight or similar,
I'm talking about (realistic) flight simulators.

I found only one and tested it for 2 days now. It is 'X-Plane'.

- X-Plane Homepage, Info, Demo (Win, Mac, Linux)
- X-Plane Addons

More similar flight simulators out there? Looks like most are dead now...

Thanks in advance!

@danilo

The twos you mentioned are the most known and have the most of addons and models, especially MSFS (see here: http://www.flightsim.com/)

Another flightsim: http://www.flightgear.org/ (open source)

This one is to simulate the piloting of RC models: http://www.realflight.com/

EDIT: removed the link to a rebranded and "fishy" version of flightgear.

I beg to differ. I described what the Free 2 Play model is, and how it works. If it sounds horrid, that might be because it is (from a consumer stand-point). I've been playing LOTRO for several years, before and after F2P. Subscribing just doesn't compare to what you get for free, I mean even stupid crap like Swift travel routes, or more than 5 auction house listing, more than 2gold for your character, have to be purchased or unlocked in some way..

I've spent more money on the game in than I have in the previous 3 years. Obviously I still play because I like the game, and I buy TP because I think some of the perks I like to get are worth it.. But that doesn't change the fact it is a manipulatively expensive process for the customer.

If you think my opinion is harsh, you should try talking to people who actually Hate the system.

Thanks luis, I'll test FlightGear. Downloading right now.

This one I never tried, yet: http://www . pro flight simulator . com/

You already tried it.

Just check the site. It says "Source code available in member area" on the bottom of the page (under the logo).

P.S. The Deluxe Package will go back up to $175 here soon. The truth is, just about everyone chooses the Deluxe package.
We plan to restore the price once the next update comes along (in 1 weeks time). So order now if you want to "lock-in" the current price.

All this made me think this guy is selling the open source software FlightGear under a new name!

You can download FlightGear completely free of charge, including the source code,
and you can order FlightGear on 4 DVDs for $49.99, containing the world-wide scenery discs.

I also found a statement from the FlightGear guys about the issue: FlightGear Flight Pro Sim Statement (v1.4a)

Oh thank you, I read some nice things about it (probably from uninformed people like myself ... I HOPE) and so I wasn't suspicious, even if on the exterior the wording used on its page looked a little "strange" to me. Uhm... nice to know.

This is another one using the browser and google earth, it's a strange and simple one but nice looking.

I still play Corncob 3D almost daily. One of these days I will have to try one of the newer flight simulators.
