Pure "Basic" holding back potential customers?

Post by Mistrel »

I'm concerned that the word "Basic" in the name of the product is holding back customers who may be put off from this derivative even before researching the language.

I also find that during interviews I'm more reluctant to mention PureBasic as my primary language for application development because I feel that my experience may be misjudged.

Does anyone else think that reinventing the product identity would help boost exposure and establish a new, more positive image?

It could even be rebranded to 'PB'. It preserves the product history and would look good in print.

I hate to agree on this, but I think you're probably right. By definition, the presence of the word "basic" indicates lack of expertise/knowledge/sophistication.

This has been discussed over and over and over... please search before posting!
I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

Put it in the wishlist / feature request area

The pointless part of this is that PB IS as BASIC compiler :!: You can call it what you like but it's still a basic compiler and if asked what the language is you will need to lie or say "basic" and if it looks like you're ashamed of that it will count even less against your looking professional

If you have some kind of complex about it or feel that you are getting discrimiated against it then learn C and take amino acids! I'm sure, given time you will get used to a new language.

There's nothing PB can do about this because you, the customer, have chosen to learn basic (and all the stigmas, real and imagined, that come with that). Only you can solve this issue if you feel it is one.

If the image of your skill is costing you money then you can either attempt an advertising campaign to educate the whole planet or you can chose a skill that has the image you want. In a few short years you can be up to speed in whatever you want.

changing the name doesn't fix the mentioned problem.

It's not fred and freaks problem if others have hangups.

powerbasic, freebasic, realbasic ,darkbasic etc, same problem. if people can't deal with this they really should change their lang

MS' VB doesn't seem to have a problem with it.
there are even jobs where "VB script knowledge" is a requirement.

there was a word by some Professor, I think from the 70ies or 80ies
"It's impossible to teach programming languages to students that have been infected with BASIC before"
... so what?
hey, I don't even know the NAME of that guy, why the heck should I care about that sentence?

In fact, I only FOUND PureBasic because I was explicitely LOOKING for some BASIC dialect.
I would not have found it if it had been named F.A.C.T.E. or such.

oh... and have a nice day.

Yes, I believe so. For example, I have a friend on msn (a fellow computer geek I talk a lot with) and whenever I mention that I made something in PureBASIC he mocks me...

But personally I like the name! I'm not telling anyone to change it.
I like logic, hence I dislike humans but love computers.

I think the problem with Basic is in people's heads, though the B in the original acronym standing for Beginner's doesn't help the situation any.

But most people also know that today's Basics are hardly low powered beginner's languages. Just look at all the stuff that's been written with all the various Basic's out there.

When I mention PureBasic and people ask me about it, I just tell them it's a dialect of Basic that has all the power and speed of C/C++.

Naaah... people STILL get speeding tickets even though down here in Houston the norm is to drive 5-12 miles over the posted (unless you are over 60 or feeble or from out of town and cannot handle the lane width or a tiny asian woman driving a H2!(my wifes sister!!!))

This is saying we should raise the speed limit because almost everyone ignores the speed limit.

I just say I code in Basic and ASM... I use BASIC to handle text and math and formatting the windows and ASM to handle structures more easily. Most people are too in awe of ASM to comment on the BASIC after that.

It makes sense. And if they want some ASM code I can plop it out of the compiler.
