Hi, I recently bought a new rig whith 2gb ram. I've been using it quite often but the problem I've noted lately is that I cannot seem to use more than 1.2gb of ram. I'm using Windows Media Center and I have tried searching for solutions to no avail. Some sites have suggested using 3gb memory instead of the 2gb, but I cannot understand why.

Basic rig :

1 x Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 675MHz/PC2-5400 XMS Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL4(4-4-4-12) Heat Spreader Lifetime Warranty 98708
1 x Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe WIFI-AP AM2 Sound 2 x GigaLan 1394 USB 2.0 WIFI-G ESATA ATX 112170
1 x AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (2.4GHz) Socket AM2 L2 1MB 2x512KB Cache Retail Boxed Processor

I also have 3 320gb SATA hard disks and a 250gb ATA one.

Just to point out. I'm not using PureBasic, I just thought maybe I could get some help from someone here.

Thanks.

I think you should of posted this in 'Off Topic' but whatever, anyway, in what way are you trying to use the memory and how have you come to the conclusion that you are only using 1.2 gb?

it is a question what other programs and apps you have running.
they use RAM, too.

so, you have windows itself, and a handfull of applications, a media player, etc...
you will be soon using 0.8GB

I have 2GB RAM, too, and I have only Firefox open at the moment.
together with the OS, antivirus etc. there are 30processes running,
and 'only' 1.6GB free left.
when I start a few more apps, I could be down at 1.2

Well I noted that over time after having a media player, some browser windows, and a word document open that if I wanted to open another application it either did not load, had problems loading or gave errors once it did load. I used task manager to get an estimate of how much ram I was actually using. I turned PF off and tested each of the sticks but have found no results.

A few people suggested that Windows media center was the problem so I have now added a seperate hard disk and I am installing Win XP Pro on that now. Hopefully this can yield some results.

I have 2GB in my laptop but it is running Vista, however I just opened 14 apps, some of them very big, and only managed to use 1.22 gigs but none of them was media center. So maybe that is the problem, who knows?

Are you sharing RAM with the video card? Onboard video? That takes away from your total stack!

I'm not sure. How do I find out if I am?
And if that is the case how do I turn that feature off? Is it a Bios setting?

With XP, try right clicking on the 'My Computer' icon and seeing how much ram you have shown on the first screen, I'm pretty sure that with shared memory systems the figure shows how much you have left after the graphics card has taken it's bit, as for turning it off, if you could you wouldn't have a display to look at!! Although I have heard that you can limit the amount used with some cards so you may be able to get some back.

MuftiMan I can't hold my curiosity any longer, how/why did you end up at this forum and think of asking here? *scratches head* Was it a Google search if so what was it or was the reason something else?

So far I still can't understand what to do with this.

Do you have onboard graphics? If so go to Asus and check forums/support there, same if you suspect memory issues. The MB really is the heart in a system so...

If possible though and you got a graphics card around (Either NVIDIA or ATI) or you got a friend with a older spare around, try that (put it in the box),
then in the bios disable the onboard MB graphics if that solves it then the obvious choice is to get/use a dedicated graphics card.

Mmm, I think I have an onboard Gfx card, but I don't use it, I use my Nvidia 7900GT 256mb. Have been having a few problems with my system since a power surge so I made a new system excluding gfx card. Maybe this is the problem?
