Installing PB under Fedora 13

Post by dhouston »

I have done a clean install of Fedora 13 and am seeing the following Linker Error
  • /usr/bin/ld: Gadget.a (Debug.o): undefined reference to symbol 'dlopen@@GLIBC_2.1'
/usr/bin/ld: 'dlopen@@GLIBC_2.1' is defined in DSO /lib/libdl.so.2 so try adding it to linker command line
/lib/libdl.so.2: could not read symbols: Invalid operation
    collect2:ld returned 1 exit status
I'm not sure if this is a factor but PB is installed to an SD card in a multiple card reader which connects via USB (this works fine under Debian 5.0) but I'm not 100% sure I have all of the support files installed as the names under Fedora are all different from those listed in checkinstall.sh.

I could not find libxine using Add/Remove Software - the closest was libxinerama.

Commenting out the libxine section of checkinstall.sh, I get no other errors.

Actually, this is the first unresolved problem I've encountered with PB/Linux although I now have another where a bit of code that was working no longer works. I don't yet know whether it's due to a change in PB or in gtk+. I should have saved earlier versions of PB so I could compare.

I'm not at all interested in trying another language.

If you like, you may download former fullreleases again (no betas). Login into you useraccount and there choose the link to the museum where you'll find all older versions.

I have upgraded to Fedora 14 (32-bit) with the same results. PB 4.51 gives the same Linker error and I cannot find any Xine package to make PB happy.

I quit using redhat when they branched. Tried new fedora'a here and there, but just always something don't work unless you get it from them.

The one I use now, I can download stuff, and make it, and it works. Ubuntu. I've made servers, database servers, Video recorders, etc, even compiled a flavor for my powerpc tivo. Got it on my router. Thing is, it just works for me.

Fedora Users should keep in mind:
Fedora is a "bleeding edge" distribution and a playground for RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux). If one really wants a Red Hat based Distro, Cent OS is quite good since it's very stable (based on RHEL).

It's very stable on my hardware - and I don't have to worry about screensavers - it just sits there with a never changing black screen. :(

I really have zero interest in Linux beyond testing PB apps under the most popular distros. If I were to run Linux as my primary OS, Delphi would be my choice because of its rock solid stability.

Try to kill the XServer with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. Then you can switch to a shell and have a look.

Delphi is a Windows IDE, but Lazarus (FreePascal compiler + IDE) is really good and stable!

I must have been up past my bedtime - I meant Debian instead of Delphi.

As for Lazarus, I am aware of it (I mentioned it a few days ago in another thread http://www.purebasic.fr/english/viewtop ... 17&t=26316) but at my age (69 in January and in poor health) am content to stick with PB. I have recommended Lazarus to a grandson just starting to program. It looks like it will also be useful with mobile devices, phones, etc.

No problem.
As for Debian: a Debian based, userfriendly and stable distro is Mint Linux 10 Deb. Mint Linux normally comes in an Ubuntu flavour, but there's a Debian flavoured version now, which is more stable and a little faster! It's worth a look.

Good choice. I've written a bunch of Apps for my windows mobile and I'm really satisfied with it when it come to x-platform GUI stuff.

If you check my signature, you'll see that I already use most of those you mention (although my Mint is not directly Debian based), I find Debian to be far more stable for my purposes than any of its offspring, including Ubuntu.
