File exisits but doesn't show

Post by shaker »

This perhaps a Windows question, but perhaps not. I've spent a few hours on it, but haven't found an explanation.

I use PB to save file. I can then use PB to open the file. So everything is fine.

BUT the only thing relating to the file that I can find when I examine its directory, and even the complete system, is its shortcut. And when I click on the shortcut, it can't find the file.

What's going on? Could someone please explain why the file doesn't show, even in an Advanced Search?

Hope you can help

Assuming you are running Vista, it sounds like these file(s) are being redirected to your 'virtual store' because you are trying to write them to a location you do not have permission to write to. This caught me out a while ago before someone over at the Powerbasic forums pointed me to the virtual store (located somewhere like C:\Users\User_name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore).

Thanks for your answer. It ties in with something which happened to me a few months ago. I was advised then to write to a permitted area, which I did and it worked and the files could be seen.

I suspect that I have tried writing to that same area and the file isn't visible. But I'll check and let you know.

Many thanks

I've put the file into an area which was permitted, but it doesn't show. But it's there because I can use pb to open it. Other files have been put there with no problem, including pb programs, all using the pb save menu.

But I'll see what I can find out about the VirtualStore.

Again many thanks.

I've half got my head round VirtualStore, but although it sounds a good security feature, it appears to give a lot of grief to a lot of people.

1) When I use pb to open a file from a specific directory, it seems that I have to key in the file name because the file isn't listed, and therefore can't be selected. This sounds very unlikely and surely there must be a way of getting the file to show for selection!

2) There's no obvious way of deleting a file - even outside pb.

Can anyone help please?

Many thanks
