Discord.pbi (only webhooks)

Post by Thorium »

If you don't know: Discord is a chat software/network, which is very popular right now, especially in the games and developer scene. You will find many games and companies having a official Discord server. One nice thing about it is, that you can fairly easily interface with it. There are two ways to do it: Make a Bot using the Discord API or just send messages to a Discord channel via webhooks. Webhooks are a lot easier and the Discord.pbi is only for using the webhooks. So you can send messages, but you can't receive them. This is interesting to send out notifications. For example have a application running somewhere and want to be notified if something happens. Discord webhook is a easy way to do it. There is also a Discord mobile app with push notifications.

I am going to implement a Discord bot via the API, but it will take some time and will not include all the features, as the API is very feature rich.

In the meantime, here is how to use the Discord webhooks:
I am also including a modified version of libcurl.pbi to work with UTF-8 encoding, otherwise messages with none ASCII characters will be discarded.

Discord.pbi

Call Init(ParallelSendDelay.i) befor using any other procedures. ParallelSendDelay is a delay in ms that is put in between messages, i recommend 500. If you set it to 0 Discord may discard messages because you send it to many requests.

SendDiscord(Webhook.s, Message.s) Sends a message to the specified webhook. The webhook is the URL you can copy if you create a webhook on your Discord channel using the Discord application.

SendDiscordParallel(Webhook.s, Message.s) Same thing as SendDiscord, but queues messages up and send them via a thread parallel to program execution.

Updated to utilize the Discord REST API. No longer need libcurl.pbi as this utilizes the inbuilt PureBasic HTTP functions.

Be careful when using that on x64, the variables are defined as LONG, which can't reliably work for integer return values (like from CreateThread() or CreateMutex()).
And I always get chills, when seeing things like Procedure.b

I've been having trouble wrapping my head around how to implement other content types. I'd like to be able to upload images like JPG or PNG perhaps even from resources.

It's amazing :!:

Thanks a lot to Thorium and also to Opcode for its adapted version. More than five years! have passed since the publication and I wanted to ask if there is any news in this direction ?

In particular, I am very interested in the following question:

Is it possible to monitor server channels from my PB application ? I would like to be informed when a new message arrives on the channel(s). Of course, the content of the message itself is also of interest, and not just the fact that it was received on the server. If it's possible, that would be great!

You can reference what you can submit as part of the json parameters here.

Yes, I have written a Discord bot entirely from scratch in PB. Accomplishing what you want to do will require a bit of work.
  • Create a new bot application on the developer portal.
  • Set message content intents (allows gateway to send message content).
  • Invite the "bot" to your server with necessary permissions.
Then the fun stuff begins. You will need to handle the websocket protocol within PB (not hard there's resources to do so here on the forum). Ensure that connection uses TLS v1.2 (again not hard, I posted a guide of how to handle TLS with libtls). Then you need to connect to the Discord gateway using your bot token. From there all you have to do is wait for events to trigger (the gateway feeds bots real-time events that happen in the server) and parse the Message Create events.
